National Library Week - Find the Library at Your Place

It’s National Library Week!!!

Like many other libraries across the world, Leeward Library has adjusted our operations in response to COVID-19, but that doesn’t mean we’ve stopped connecting you to the resources you need to learn, enjoy, and ultimately succeed! For this year’s National Library Week, we celebrate by bringing you virtual experiences and digital resources that explore a wealth of knowledge across the globe. And the greatest part? You can enjoy it all from wherever you are. As the world transforms around us, remember that you will no doubt find your place at the library, even when you find the library at your place!

If you read our teaser post last week and saw nothing on our National Library Week page [New Window] . . . the page is now a-live! We’ve packed in quite a few activities, virtual and physical, you can do at home.

  • Start off globe-trotting on our interactive world map [New Window] and when you have the time, you can:
    • Explore local, mainland, and international sites
    • View upcoming livestream concerts
    • Enter the Hogwarts Digital Escape Room
  • Bored in the house [New Window]? We have a few tips to battle boredom!
  • April 22 is Earth Day [New Window]! Since Earth Day is during National Library Week this year, we are also celebrating Earth Week and will help promote UH Sustainability Office’s Earth Week Challenge [New Window] on Instagram.
  • Stream popular movies from Leeward subscribed databases, such as Kanopy and Swank [New Window]!
  • We have various e-Reading resources [New Window] for leisure or scholarship!  Flip through trendy digital magazines on Flipster, browse articles from The New York Times newspaper, and more!

Using OverDrive tab graphic and link to webpage

Learn about OverDrive and using the Libby App in the Using OverDrive tab [New Window].

OverDrive [New Window] is a digital (e-Book and audiobook) collection of general and popular nonfiction and fiction titles along with titles supporting select Leeward classes. We welcome any recommendations!

And finally, we have our Annual Library User Survey ! Please fill this out when you get the chance. Your feedback is important for improving our services.

If you have any questions or comments about National Library Week, please let us know!

Earth Week @Leeward CC

50 Years Earth Day 2020

What a special week! We get to celebrate both National Library Week and the 50th Earth Day!

Even while we are socially distancing, our Leeward CC campus, UH, the city & county, state, and numerous organizations are offering digital activities, challenges, and events. We’ve compiled our favorite library resources and links to Earth Day/Week/Month fun on the Earth Day tab of our Campus Sustainability LibGuide [New Window].

Please join us in the library on social media as we participate in the UH Virtual Earth Week Daily Challenges [New Window]:

Sunday: Start an environmental journal & share one of your observations!
Monday: Mālama ʻāina by following one of the 27 gardening hacks from home
Tuesday: Walk or bike somewhere that you’d usually drive. What did you notice on your journey this time?
Wednesday: Start composting your food waste at home! What method will you be using?
Thursday: Take your used coffee grounds & create your own exfoliating coffee scrub.
Friday: Try to regrow a fruit or vegetable from scraps. Easy starters are lettuce, onions, & ginger!
Saturday: Tag us in a photo of your favorite outdoor spot (old pictures work great!).
Don’t forget to tag @sustainableuh and #leewardearthday
Hauʻoli lā hōnua!

Expanded access to resources in response to COVID-19

Publishers, database vendors, and non-profit organizations are responding to the COVID-19 pandemic by offering temporary, free access to content. The HathiTrust Emergency Temporary Access Service offers access to millions of volumes from US research libraries with full-text access to volumes held by the UHM Hamilton Library. The National Emergency Library from the Internet Archive is a collection of digitized books supporting emergency remote teaching. Collections from JSTOR, Project Muse, Cambridge University Textbooks, Harvard Business Review ebooks, and more are available for a limited time (view list).

These temporarily free resources along with the Library’s subscription databases and online collections and no-cost OER repositories and collections offer continued and expanded access to valuable and credible resources during this time of crisis.

To prevent more information overload, librarians are available to assist you with navigating these and other resources. Contact us by phone, email, or online chat. Online consultations are also available to you and to your students. Additional services specifically for students include printing, course reserves, and extended laptop loans.
