Finals Countdown: End of Semester Services [New Window]

It’s Finals Week!!! A few service announcements:

 

Laptop Returns

We will be setting up a laptop return table in front of the Learning Commons, May 13-15 (Wednesday to Friday):

  • Wednesday: 8am – Noon
  • Thursday: Noon – 4pm
  • Friday: 8am – Noon

If students are unable to return their laptops during these times, they can contact us by phone (x210) or email (lcccirc@hawaii.edu) to make arrangements for other drop-off times. Library staff are available Monday – Friday, 8am – 4pm.

Finals Countdown at Leeward CC Library

This semester, we will host Finals Countdown entirely ONLINE!

National Library Week - Find the Library at Your Place

It’s National Library Week!!!

Like many other libraries across the world, Leeward Library has adjusted our operations in response to COVID-19, but that doesn’t mean we’ve stopped connecting you to the resources you need to learn, enjoy, and ultimately succeed! For this year’s National Library Week, we celebrate by bringing you virtual experiences and digital resources that explore a wealth of knowledge across the globe. And the greatest part? You can enjoy it all from wherever you are. As the world transforms around us, remember that you will no doubt find your place at the library, even when you find the library at your place!

If you read our teaser post last week and saw nothing on our National Library Week page [New Window] . . . the page is now a-live! We’ve packed in quite a few activities, virtual and physical, you can do at home.

  • Start off globe-trotting on our interactive world map [New Window] and when you have the time, you can:
    • Explore local, mainland, and international sites
    • View upcoming livestream concerts
    • Enter the Hogwarts Digital Escape Room
  • Bored in the house [New Window]? We have a few tips to battle boredom!
  • April 22 is Earth Day [New Window]! Since Earth Day is during National Library Week this year, we are also celebrating Earth Week and will help promote UH Sustainability Office’s Earth Week Challenge [New Window] on Instagram.
  • Stream popular movies from Leeward subscribed databases, such as Kanopy and Swank [New Window]!
  • We have various e-Reading resources [New Window] for leisure or scholarship!  Flip through trendy digital magazines on Flipster, browse articles from The New York Times newspaper, and more!

Libraries = Strong Communities

What is National Library Week? Each year, around the 2nd week of April, libraries across the nation will highlight the roles of libraries, librarians, and staff and what part they play in communities. This year’s National Library Week theme is: Libraries = Strong Communities.

Please fill out our annual survey to provide feedback on how we can improve our services. We will be distributing our annual survey via email, our National Library Week webpage, and you can do it in person at our iPad kiosks–located at the Learning Commons’ entrance or upstairs by the Reference Desk!

2018 Library User Survey Results

Mahalo to those who participated in our Annual Library User Survey [New Window] which was conducted April 9-22, 2018.  We went entirely paperless! Links to the survey were made available on our library website, National Library Week LibGuide, library blog, and on our iPad stands [New Window] located in the 2nd floor Learning Commons and the 3rd floor library area. A total of 81 survey responses were collected from students, faculty, and staff. Below is a brief recap of the results.

Demographics

2018 Annual Survey Demographic

  • 54 respondents were students, 27 were faculty and staff.
  • 64.8% of students classified themselves as full-time, 35.2% classified as part-time
  • 85% of all respondents selected the Pearl City campus as their main location
  • 46.3% of students said they visited the library 4 or more times a week
  • 48.1% of faculty and staff said they visited the library 1-2 times a month

Primary Uses of the Library

Student respondents primarily used the library to study or use/borrow the computers, laptops, or iPads. Faculty and staff respondents primarily used the library to meet and collaborate with the librarians and borrow books and other materials.

Library Hours

94.8% of respondents were satisfied with the library’s hours.

  • 92.3% of students agreed they were satisfied with the library’s hours
  • 100% of faculty and staff agreed they were satisfied with the library’s hours

Library’s Physical Space

Comfort

97.9% of respondents felt comfortable in the library.

Most of the student respondents were equally comfortable on the 1st Floor – Learning Commons and 2nd Floor – Library while the faculty and staff preferred the 2nd floor – Library than the 1st Floor – Learning Commons.

95.8% of respondents thought the library was conducive to learning.

Overall Satisfaction of Library Services & Resources

97.5% of respondents were generally satisfied with the services, resources, and support provided by the library.

A few comments on what patrons like about Leeward CC Library:

“The availability of computers, the group study rooms, and also the newspaper and magazines. I also like the changing books and themes as I walk in, the glass cases are always full of interesting things.”

“Ease of working with librarians, scheduling class sessions.”

“Everything for student’s academic success is located in one area. Also there so many great resources in there.”

“Quietness to do my research (2nd floor); catching up on my reading (magazines); entry door displays; Hawaiian/Pacific section; KimoBean; available resources; bestseller novels; popular DVDs available for viewing.”

“Service-oriented. Many practical services, events, displays, flyers, activities to help students be engaged and interested and to help them grow increasingly more knowledgeable about how to use all the available resources.”

Suggestions for improvement include:

  • Longer, more varied hours including weekends
  • More computer and group study areas
  • More desk space for studying
  • Improving access: wider stairway entrances to 3rd floor and better elevator access
  • More books and access to resources
  • More programming: events, library tours, workshops, etc.
